GMAT EXAM

GMAT is one of the most appeared exams by graduates. Before you decide to appear for the exam, it is essential to understand the area of subjects and what they cover. Therefore, the GMAT exam Syllabus is what you should be most aware of if you are looking forward to applying for a business and management university abroad. The GMAT has 4 sections, which are explained below in the syllabus.

GMAT Syllabus for Analytical Writing Section

You will have 30 minutes to complete the GMAT Analytical Writing section. Here you will have topics, on which you will have to write, or a passage may be given and you have to answer the questions based on it. The GMAT syllabus for this section is huge and varied as the topic of the passage could be any topic of general interest. The topic can be based on science, events, management, sports, or any other subject.

There are 2 types of essays in the GMAT syllabus:

• Argument-based essays: You will have to analyse the viewpoint or reason and then a justified argument needs to be written.
• Issue-based essays: Here an issue or problem will be given. You will need to write an essay based on the issue. An individual opinion is welcome too. The length of your essay should not exceed 600 words.

You will not only be marked on your opinion or thought process, but also on your writing style which will fetch you a good result. Go for a balanced opinion. Focus more on your writing style, tone, and structure of the write-up.

GMAT Syllabus for Integrated Reasoning Section

In the reasoning section, data will be given in various forms. You need to analyse and evaluate the data presented in the form of graphs or a simple table format. This section will have 12 questions, and 30 minutes will be given. This section will have the following types of questions:

• Multi-source: There will be various sources of data like passages, tables, graphical representations, or a combination of all of them. You will have to analyse and interpret each of the data sources very carefully. The questions will be based on finding inferences, finding the relevance of data, or finding discrepancies among various data sources.
• Table analysis: The data will be presented in a table with all the information. You need to sort, interpret and analyse the data and information provided
• Two-part analysis: There will be trade-offs, equations, and relationships between factors and 2 entities.
• Graphical interpretation: The data will be displayed in the form of a pie chart, bar graph, curve, histogram, or a graphical image. The information presented in these forms needs to be explained in simple language or mathematical form. The interpretation should explain the relationship between the data and state the right conclusion.

GMAT Syllabus for Quantitative Section

According to the GMAT Syllabus, there are 2 types of questions asked in Quantitative Aptitude. Problem Solving and Data Sufficiency. Both the questions can be solved with some analytical skills and reasoning skills. However, mathematical skills are more emphasized. The GMAT Quantitative syllabus comprises the math of the high-school level. The topics covered under quantitative reasoning are:

• Geometry
• Arithmetic
• Elementary algebra
• Properties of Integers
• Ratio Proportion
• Exponents
• Linear equation
• Permutations and Combinations

There will be 18 questions in the data sufficiency part and another 18 in the problem-solving part. There will be 5 options given for each answer and the grades will be rewarded for the right answer. There is no negative marking for the incorrect answers, so do not leave any question without answering.

GMAT Syllabus for Verbal Reasoning Section

The next section in the GMAT exam syllabus is the Verbal Reasoning section. It has 36 questions, and the duration is 65 minutes. There are 3 types of questions in Verbal Reasoning. They are:

• Reading comprehension has passages from physical and biological sciences, social sciences and humanities, and business-related fields. Based on the passage, you will be given multiple-choice questions. You will have to read the entire passage and then answer the questions.
• In Critical reasoning, a short passage of around 100 words is given. Each of these passages contains 5 answer choices. You will have to choose one option that either strengthens or weakens the argument, provides information about why the argument is flawed, supports the argument, or destroys it.
• In the sentence correction part, a certain part of the sentence will be underlined. You have to rectify issues or problems with it. The grammatical errors need to be corrected if any.

This section checks your ability to read and interpret the passage to give suitable answers. It evaluates the English proficiency of the applicant. The GMAT verbal syllabus comprises the following topics:

• The rhetorical construction of the sentences
• Critical reasoning
• Reading unseen passages
• Sentence correction related to finding an error or omission
• Misplaced modifiers
• Subject-verb agreement
• Countable Vs Uncountable
• Parallelism
